South Bend police are trying to catch a scammer preying on elderly residents of the city.

A white man in his 50s has been approaching homes on the east and south sides of South Bend and, “through a combination of persistence and mild intimidation,” convincing residents to allow him to service their water softeners, according to a news release from the South Bend Police Department.

The man fumbles around with the appliance for several minutes, then claims the water softener has been cleaned and demands a payment of $50 to $70.

Police hope to catch the man in the act or immediately after the scam while he still has the victim’s payment with him.

Anyone who has been approached by this man or knows his identity is asked to contact the police department at 574-235-9201 or 574-288-STOP.
