Police have identified the woman now facing federal charges after she allegedly shot at police officers during a high-speed chase in South Bend Wednesday morning, Aug. 6.

Federal authorities have filed a criminal complaint against Carla Merriweather, 24, in connection with the incident, according to a report from the Elkhart Truth’s news partner WNDU.

Police say Merriweather stole a pickup truck belonging to a retired police officer in downtown South Bend around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. When police began to pursue her, she led them down Main Street at speeds of up to 100 mph, WSBT reported.

Merriweather also shot at police officers using a gun the retired police officer had left in his vehicle, police said. At least one officer returned fire.

The chase ended near the post office on South Main Street just south of Chippewa Avenue and Merriweather was arrested and taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.

St. Joseph County Metro Homicide was called in to investigate, as is protocol in any officer-involved shooting.
