Police in Elkhart County are starting a new traffic safety campaign this weekend with a high visibility enforcement zone to catch intoxicated drivers.
The Elkhart County Traffic Safety Partnership will kick off Operation Pull Over, which will last through the Labor Day weekend, with the enforcement zone from 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, until 1 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 between Elkhart and Goshen, according to a news release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.
Police will then conduct increased patrols in the southern part of Elkhart and northern part of Goshen from 1 to 3 a.m. Saturday.
There have been 125 alcohol- and drug-related crashes in Elkhart County this year, according to the news release. These have resulted in 27 injuries and three fatalities.
In the same period last year, there were only 96 crashes involving alcohol or drugs, with 32 injuries and one fatality.
