Elkhart police are investigating a crash in which an SUV struck an apartment building Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to 100 S. Michigan St. at 2:55 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, an Elkhart emergency dispatcher said.

Resident Teresa Williams told FOX28 she was asleep when she heard a loud noise.

“So I got up, I looked down and I saw carlights and somebody backing in and backing out trying to get out of the house,” Williams said. “It was just very frightening.”

Residents were evacuated from the building while crews cleaned up the scene.

The driver of the SUV might have had a medical issue that caused them to go through a stop sign and into the building, WSBT reports. The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
