A Mishawaka woman was killed and four others were injured in a two-car crash in Cass County late Saturday evening.
Emergency responders were called to the scene on M-60 Highway near Yankee Street in Howard Township at 9: 51 p.m. Saturday, July 26, according to a news release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.
Police say Austin Brouwer, 19, of Osceola was driving north on M-60 at a high rate of speed when he attempted to pass a vehicle on the right dirt portion of the highway.
Brouwer lost control of the vehicle, which went back onto the paved part of the road and hit the vehicle other vehicle, driven by 32-year-old Douglas Irving of Niles.
Brouwer’s vehicle went into the grass median and flipped several times.
Brouwer was taken to Memorial Hospital by ambulance and was listed in stable condition on Sunday morning, July 27, according to the sheriff’s department.
Janet Menting, 21, of South Bend, had been sitting in the front passenger seat of Brouwer’s vehicle and was airlifted to Memorial Hospital. She was in critical condition Sunday morning.
Back seat passenger Scott Voresis, 21, of South Bend, was taken by ambulance to Lakeland Community Hospital in Niles, where he was treated and released.
Rayna Dobrodt, 23, of Mishwaka was also in the back seat of Brouwer’s vehicle. She was taken to Lakeland Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Irving, the other driver, was treated and released at Lakeland Community Hospital.
Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash and everyone involved was wearing seatbelts, according to the news release.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the crash.
