Police identify body found in burning Middlebury house Wednesday morning

Police and the state fire marshal are investigating a Wednesday morning house fire in Middlebury. Police say the body of 69-year-old Lona J. Chutsch was found in the home.

A 69-year-old woman was found dead inside a burning Middlebury home early Wednesday.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s officers were called to a house fire at 11494 C.R. 4 at 12:16 a.m., according to a police report.

The body of Lona J. Chutsch was found in the home. 

Elkhart County Deputy Coroner James Elliot said an autopsy was completed Wednesday, July 23 and is still awaiting tissue samples and a toxicology report. 

"Nothing suspicious is suspected at this point," he said. 

The sheriff’s department and Indiana State Fire Marshal are investigating the incident.

Investigators still have no indication that the fire or Chutsch’s death is suspicious, according to sheriff’s department news release.
