ELKHART — Police and firefighters were called to an Elkhart business for a possible bomb threat after an employee confused a GPS tracking device with a bomb.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department and Baugo Township Fire Department were called to MSC Industrial Direct, 28551 Laura Court, at 7:36 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, after an employee found a suspicious-looking electronic device with a battery pack and a blinking red light on a desk, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department.

The employee took the device outside and threw it in a ditch on the north side of the building, police said.

Managers at the company told police the device was a GPS tracker the company assembles and sends out in packages.

"There was no threat at all,“ Holmes said.
