Elkhart man in critical condition after Sunday evening motorcycle crash

Shazzar Mack, 26, is in critical condition at Memorial Hospital after his motorcycle crashed with a car Sunday evening.

An Elkhart man was hospitalized Sunday evening after his motorcycle crashed with a car at the intersection of C.R. 1 and C.R. 16.

Shazzar Mack, 26, of Elkhart was driving his motorcycle eastbound on C.R. 16 approaching C.R. 1 just before 10 p.m. Sunday, July 20, when a passenger car attempted to turn left from C.R. 16 onto C.R. 1 in front of him, according to a news release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Mack was unable to avoid the collision and was thrown several feet from his motorcycle. 

He was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment of head injuries and was in critical condition at 6 a.m. Monday, July 21. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The driver of the car, 26-year-old Jose R. Abarca Sanchez of Goshen, was not injured in the crash and was given a citation for failure to yield the right of way.

This was the second motorcycle crash the sheriff’s department responded to on Sunday and the fourth in seven days. Three of crashes were fatal.
