A motorcyclist traveling 52 mph over the speed limit crashed into the back of another vehicle stopped at a red light Sunday evening.

33-year-old Michael Nunez of Elkhart was riding his motorcycle west on C.R. 6 near C.R. 15 at approximately 7:45 p.m. Sunday, July 13, when an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Deputy clocked him going 97 mph in a 45 mph zone, according to a press release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

When the officer turned around to try to stop the motorcycle, he found it had collided with the rear of a vehicle stopped at a red light, which was not damaged in the crash.

Nunez was ejected from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. He was transported to Memorial Hospital of South Bend, and his current condition is unknown, according to the press release.

The Sheriff’s Department is continuing to investigate, and the possibility of alcohol being involved is also being looked into.
