Mishawaka firefighter faces boating while intoxicated charges after weekend arrest

The firefighter was arrested during a targeted enforcement action on a Kosciusko County lake by the Indiana DNR and State Excise Police.

A Mishawaka firefighter is facing charges of operating a watercraft while intoxicated after a targeted law enforcement operation over the holiday weekend.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources and State Excise Police held a targeted enforcement operation on Saturday, July 5, at a sandbar in James Lake in Kosciusko County.

Officers were looking for intoxicated boaters and minors consuming alcohol at the sand bar, according to a news release from the DNR.

Nicholas Ponsler of South Bend, a 27-year-old firefighter with the Mishawaka Fire Department, was arrested on a preliminary charge of operating a watercraft while intoxicated, WSBT reported.

Officers also cited 16 minors for illegal consumption of an alcoholic beverage, according to the news release.
