ELKHART — Three men were arrested Saturday night after attempting to rob two Elkhart businesses and firing several shots in the process.
Robert L. Smith, 20, and Leonard Taylor, 19, both of Michigan City, entered Saleh’s Market, 401 Middlebury St., at 4:37 p.m. Saturday, July 5, and demanded money from an employee while pointing a gun at him, said Lt. Peggy Snider of the Elkhart Police Department.
The men fired two shots before leaving the store without taking any money or merchandise, Snider said. There were no customers in the store at the time and no one was injured.
Two people were killed a the market last year during an attempted robbery. Kevin Moore pleaded guilty by mental illness to two counts of murder and accomplice Richard Gross pleaded guilty to two counts of felony murder in the case.
Police were also called for another robbery at 5:42 p.m. at RWD Sales, 508 Oakland Ave., Snider said. During the investigation, police determined that Smith and Taylor were both involved, along with 20-year-old Akheem Purnell of Elkhart.
Smith and Taylor were booked into the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary charges of two counts of armed robbery. Purnell was booked at the jail on a preliminary charge of disorderly conduct, according to jail records.
