Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Rainbow Bend Boulevard and South West Boulevard in Elkhart shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, after a construction crew struck a two-inch gas main, an Elkhart emergency dispatcher confirmed.
The Elkhart Fire Department monitored air quality and evacuated the residents, an Elkhart Fire Battalion Chief Wes Johnson said. Residents were allowed to return to the area after the gas was shut off at 2 p.m., according to NIPSCO.
At that time, the fire department did not have an estimate as far as when the damage would be repaired, Johnson said.
Construction work at the intersection began June 11. The intersection will continue to be closed for construction work on the water main, storm sewer and roadway until July 25, according to a notice from the city.
