ELKHART — Elkhart police received several reports of fake $20 and $50 bills in the last week.

Businesses and the public should watch for counterfeit money and call the police tipline at 389-4777 if they have information. More fake $20 and $50 bills may be in circulation in the Elkhart area.

Identifying counterfeit money

The U.S. Secret Service has tips for identifying counterfeit bills:

  • Real bills have a raised texture, while counterfeit bills are often flat.
  • Serial numbers on real bills have the same ink color as the Treasury seal. Fake bills may have unevenly spaced serial numbers that are a different color ink.
  • Genuine currency paper has red and blue fibers embedded in it. Currency with red and blue lines printed on it instead of embedded is fake.
  • Federal Reserve and Treasury seals have saw-tooth points around the edge that are clear and sharp on real currency. Fake bills may have uneven or broken points on the seals.
