Readers react to Elkhart teen's experience with synthetic marijuana
Elkhart teenager Dre used to see synthetic drugs passed around at school, and there were rumors that boys smoked the drug in the bathroom and that the convenience store near the school sold the drug.
Dre eventually began to smoke synthetic marijuana herself.
She never went to the convenience store herself but got the drug from people she knew. Dre eventually moved out of her home, returning only to steal money from her family to feed her addiction. However, a frightening episode with the drug eventually turned Dre away from synthetic marijuana.
Our conversation about the drug began after raids on several Elkhart and St. Joseph county convenience stores suspected of selling synthetic marijuana on June 9. Twenty people were arrested, 11 of whom were in Elkhart County.
When we posted this story on social media, a number of readers sympathized with the families of those who have use synthetic marijuana. Others said the users are adults who made bad decisions and should not be empathized with. The conversation eventually turned to the legalization of marijuana, which is different from synthetic marijuana, and other drugs.
