Two people were injured in a Cass County crash early Wednesday morning after a driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Emergency crews were called to US-12 near Suszek Road in Porter Township at 5:27 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, and found two cars on the north side of the road, according to a news release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

Police say 21-year-old Dwight J. Ottman of Cassopolis was driving eastbound on U.S. 12 when he fell asleep and crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, where he collided head-on with a westbound vehicle driven by 48-year-old Becky A. Worth of White Pigeon. The vehicles spun out and came to rest on the north side of the road.

Both drivers were taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment. Both were wearing seatbelts and alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department’s investigation is ongoing.
