GOSHEN — The court continued the trial date for a man facing a murder charge in connection with the 2012 death of Jesse Bowen.

After hearing arguments from counsel, Elkhart Circuit Court Judge Terry Shewmaker continued the trial date for Travion Kirkland, 20, of Roseland, Ind. to Jan. 12, 2015.

Kirkland’s trial was placed as the one with highest priority on the list of trials scheduled for Jan. 12.

Kirkland was arrested in his home Dec. 31, 2013, on a warrant.

Bowen, 21, was found with a gunshot wound to his chest April 16, 2012, in his house in the 56000 block of Best Avenue, in Baugo Township. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to court files, Kirkland told police he knew Bowen and had bought marijuana from him in the previous months. Witnesses told police Kirkland tried to get a ride from Elkhart to South Bend the night of the shooting.

Later, when police interrogated Kirkland, he told them he was in South Bend when the shooting happened. Other information he gave police did not add up with what witnesses said.

Kirkland’s trial status conference is scheduled for Dec. 18 at 8:30 a.m.
