Driver falls asleep on U.S. 33, veers into oncoming traffic

Two people were injured in a three-vehicle Baugo Township crash Wednesday afternoon after a driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Daniel Matthews, 19, of Elkhart, was driving a truck eastbound on U.S. 33 west of C.R. 1 when he fell asleep and crossed the center line into westbound traffic, according to a news release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

The truck sideswiped a westbound SUV driven by 56-year-old Charles Hall of Goshen and the collided nearly head-on with a car driven by 28-year-old Brock Burden of Mishawaka.

Matthews was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of cuts to his face, arms and legs and pain in his elbow.

Burden was also taken to the hospital with a broken leg, cuts and back pain.

All three drivers were wearing seatbelts. Matthews was cited for driving left of center.
