Covington man arrested after shooting rifle into river near I-74 bridge

The Covington man had mounted a rifle on his boat and was seen by officers shooting into the river.

A Covington man was arrested on several charges after he was seen shooting a rifle mounted on his boat into the Wabash River.

Stephen M. Winland, 51, was arrested on Friday, May 30, in Vermillion County after Indiana Conservation Officer Deland Szczepanski saw him shooting into the river near the I-74 bridge, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Winland had mounted a rifle on the front of a jon boat and was firing rounds into the river, with some bullets ricocheting off the water toward the bridge.

Officers recovered 105 empty rifle casings from inside the boat.

He was arrested at his residence and booked at the Vermillion County Jail on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness with a firearm, shooting into or across state water, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia

The Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the arrest, according to the news release.
