Motorcyclist dies after being struck by SUV near Nappanee Saturday

The Petoskey, Mich., man was seriously injured when an SUV turned left into his motorcycle’s path.

NAPPANEE — A Michigan man died after he was struck while riding his motorcycle near Nappanee Saturday afternoon, May 24.

George J. Bommarito, 49, of Petoskey, Mich., died at 11:39 a.m. Sunday, May 25, of injuries he sustained in a crash with an SUV that occurred the previous afternoon near Nappanee, according to a press release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Bommarito was driving east on U.S. 6 around 3:30 p.m. Saturday and attempted to overtake an SUV as the vehicle was turning right onto C.R. 11. The SUV then made an abrupt left turn and hit him.

He had sustained incapacitating head injuries in the crash and was taken by helicopter to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
