Police ask for public's help finding woman suspected of stealing wallet

The woman is accused of stealing a wallet out of another woman’s purse at a local grocery store.

The Elkhart Police Department is asking the public for help identifying a woman who is accused of stealing a wallet from a customer at a local grocery store Sunday, May 10.

According to a news release from the police department, the victim was shopping at the store when she walked away from her grocery cart, leaving her purse behind while she looked at items on a store shelf. 

The suspect walked up to the cart, reached into the purse, took the wallet and continued walking. Images taken from a store surveillance camera are shown above.

The name and location of the grocery store have been withheld for purposes of the investigation, Elkhart Police Department Detective Steve Mock said.

According to the press release, the suspect is believed to have used a credit card from the stolen wallet in St. Joseph County and also attempted to use the card at a business in Chicago.
