A Middlebury man was rescued from his burning car by an off-duty firefighter after a crash in Steuben County Wednesday.

According to a report from WANE.com, 31-year-old Middlebury resident Luke Fenwick was westbound on Bayview Road from 200 West Wednesday afternoon, May 14, when the vehicle went off the road and struck a large tree.

Two Steuben County residents, Larry Bassett and Bryan Sorgen, arrived at the scene shortly after the crash, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department told WANE.

Sorgen, an off-duty Fort Wayne firefighter, broke a window on Fenwick’s car and the two men pulled Fenwick from the vehicle as the engine compartment caught fire.

Police said the men’s actions may have saved Fenwick’s life.

Fenwick was taken to a hospital for treatment.
