Police responded to a stabbing and shooting late Friday night, May 9, in Mishawaka, our news partner WNDU reported.

The St. Joseph County Police Department responded to the 59000 block of Elm Road following reports of shots fired, WNDU reported. When officers arrived, they found a 52-year-old man who had been stabbed in the chest outside of a home at 59070 Elm Road.

Sgt. William Redman told WSBT in a statement that two witnesses saw the victim fire a handgun at the man who stabbed him as he was fleeing the scene in a truck. Redman told WSBT police were unsure whether or not the man was hit by gunfire.

WNDU reported shell casings were found on a driveway near the home. Two witnesses said a disagreement between the men led to the incident, WNDU reported.

The stabbing victim was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend Friday night, where he underwent surgery. His condition is unknown at this time, WNDU reported.
