MIDDLEBURY — An industrial fire overnight was contained to one building, and firefighters say it was thanks to the business' sprinkler system.

The Middlebury, Clinton Township and Shipshewana fire departments were called at about 1:30 a.m. Friday for reports of a business fire at Indiana Wood Products, which is located at 58228 County Road 43, Middlebury.

The Elkhart Truth's news partners at WNDU report that firefighters could see flames through the roof when they arrived at the scene.

The fire was contained to one building, where they make wood products. Firefighters told WNDU they think some of the equipment caught fire.

“If they didn't have a sprinkler system, it probably would of burned down. That's what saved the building - that early control of the fire, to let it get beyond the fully involved stage,” Middlebury Fire Chief Jeff Wogoman told WNDU.

Fire crews tackled fire from the roof, then moved inside the building to put the rest of the fire out.

Crews cleared the scene by 4:30 a.m., according to a dispatcher from the Elkhart County Communications Center.

“I figured we'd have a beast on our hands, but it went pretty smooth,” Chief Wogoman said.

WNDU reports that one of the firefighters is recovering from a back injury he suffered at the scene.
