Bicyclist hospitalized after crash with truck south of Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — One person was hospitalized after a truck and bicycle crashed south of Middlebury early Monday morning.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, 34-year-old Dennis Bontrager of Middlebury was riding a bicycle northbound on C.R. 35 south of C.R. 20 on the side of the road early Monday morning, May 5, when he was stuck from behind by a pickup truck.

The Ford Ranger, driven by 17-year-old Miciah Lambright of Millersburg, was headed northbound on C.R. 35 when it left the roadway. The front driver side of the truck struck the back wheel of the bicycle.

Police and medics were called to the scene at scene at 4:18 a.m.

Bontrager was taken to IU Health Goshen Hospital by ambulance for treatment of a gash on the right side of his head, broken nose, broken cheek bone and a small brain bleed.

Lambright was not injured. 

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the crash.
