Police identify man killed in car and train crash near C.R. 13 and C.R. 45

The driver of a van that was hit by a train in Dunlap was identified as Michael McMannis, 33, of Elkhart.

ELKHART — Police have identified the driver who died when his van was hit by a train in the Dunlap area Friday morning, May 2. 

According to a press release from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, Michael McMannis, 33, of Elkhart, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. 

Emergency units were called at about 11:13 a.m. to reports of a car and train crash at the railroad crossing near the intersection of C.R. 45 and C.R. 13.

Witnesses said they saw McMannis drive his van around the gates at the crossing, moving into the train's path. The train was traveling northwest when the collision happened, according to Capt. Jim Bradberry, of the sheriff's department. 

Bradberry said the department's crash team would investigate the incident to determine why McMannis drove onto the railroad. 

The railroad crossing at C.R. 13 was closed for several hours while police conducted its investigation.
