Cass County crash leaves one person dead, two in hospital

MASON TOWNSHIP, MICH. — The Cass County Sheriff's Department has identified the man killed in a Thursday morning crash as 54-year-old John Stone of Union, Mich.

According to the sheriff's department, Stone was driving a pickup truck southbound on Five Points Road just before 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 1, and failed to yield at an intersection for a semi truck headed westbound on Old M-205.

Stone was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck, 50-year-old Robert Arnold of Sparta, Mich., was taken to Elkhart General Hospital, along with Donald Bardo of Union, who had been a passenger in the pickup truck.

Stone was not wearing a seatbelt and alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to police. The crash remains under investigation.

The Cass County Sheriff's Department was assisted at the scene by Porter Fire and Ambulance Service, Edwardsburg Ambulance Service,  the Edwardsburg Ontwa Township Police Department and the Michigan State Police.
