Motorcyclist recovering from severe lower leg injury following two-vehicle crash
ELKHART — A man is recovering from injuries after he was involved in a crash Saturday, April 19, while riding his motorcycle.
Emergency units were called at about 5 p.m. that day to Cassopolis Street, near Woodlawn Avenue, for reports of a crash involving a motorcycle and a car.
According to the crash report from the Elkhart Police Department, Mark Varab, 47, was driving his motorcycle north on Cassopolis Street, north of Woodlawn Avenue.
Dana Baugher, 23, drove out onto Cassopolis Street from Chalet Party Shop and merged onto the turn lane to complete a left turn. Varab passed Baugher on the left side as she started making a left-hand turn and hit Baugher's car.
The collision caused Varab to slide 175.6 feet before coming to a rest in the far west lane.
Baugher told police she was pulling out of Chalet and merged over to the center lane to make a left-hand turn into a parking lot. She said she did not see the motorcyclist until he collided with her car.
Varab was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for a serious injury to his lower leg. He is now listed in stable condition, according to a representative of the hospital.
Several witnesses at the scene were interviewed, but no one was able to tell police what happened before the crash.
