Family pets saved from basement fire in Elkhart early Monday morning

Everyone in the home at the time of the fire, including five pet chicks and a guinea pig, made it out without injuries.

Nobody was injured in a house fire that destroyed a basement in the 58000 block of C.R. 13 early Monday monring, April 21.

Concord Township Fire Department was called to a basement fire at 58091 C.R. 13 just after midnight Monday and found heavy smoke coming from the home when they arrived, Captain Bryan Jaenichen with Concord said in a phone interview Monday morning.

Everyone inside the home at the time of the fire managed to escape without injuries.

"We even got the pets out," Jaenichen said. "Five chicks in a box and a guinea pig."

The fire had mostly snuffed itself out by the time crews got there. The basement was destroyed and smoke and heat from the fire damaged other parts of the home.

Harrison Township and Baugo Township fire departments were called to assist.

Crews left the scene at approximately 2:07 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
