SOUTH BEND — A Goshen man was sentenced this week to one year probation and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine for killing migratory birds.

Ronald Simmons, 44, had previously pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor offense of taking, killing or possessing migratory birds, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

In March 2012, Simmons illegally killed and took great horned owls and red-tailed hawks, both of which are migratory birds native to the United States protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, according to the news release.

The case was the result of an investigation by the Department of Fish and Wildlife Services and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Donald Schmid.
