Two injured in single-vehicle crash east of Edwardsburg

EDWARDSBURG, Mich. — Two men were taken to the hospital after their car crashed into a utility pole Thursday night, April 10.

The Cass County Sheriff's Department, along with the Edwardsburg Police Department, Porter Township Fire Department and other emergency units, responded at about 9:26 p.m. to U.S. 12 and Five Points Road for reports of a single-vehicle crash. 

According to a press release from the sheriff's department, Dustin Heldenbrand, 32, of Woodburn, Ind., was driving east on M-205 approaching U.S. 12 and lost control of his car in the curve. He ran off the roadway to the right side and struck a utility pole. 

Heldenbrand was taken to Elkhart General Hospital. A passenger in the vehicle, Michael Richardson, 29, was also injured in the crash and taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he was treated and released. 

According to the sheriff's department, alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor to the crash and seat belts were used. The sheriff's department continues to investigate the incident.
