Elkhart man taken to hospital following crash on Old U.S. 33

ELKHART — A man could be facing charges after he drove his car off the road and into a ditch Monday evening, March 31. 

Police and emergency service units were called to Old U.S. 33, west of Tower Road, for reports of a crash. According to a press release from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, units responded at about 8:48 p.m.

Mitchell Swanson, 38, of Elkhart was driving west on on Old U.S. 33 when he ran off the north side of the road and into a ditch, causing the car to overturn, according to the release. 

Swanson was taken to Elkhart General Hospital, where he was treated and released, according to a hospital source. 

According to the sheriff's department press release, Swanson was found to have operated his vehicle while intoxicated after failing a three-part field sobriety test. He refused a chemical testing. 

Charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, driving while suspended prior and operating a vehicle with an open container are pending, according to the release.
