One person is dead after a shooting Sunday night at Deer Creeke Apartments in Elkhart.

Police responded to a report of shots fired on the 2800 block of Toledo Road. Capt. Jim Bradberry of the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department confirmed one person was shot and killed but, as of 11:45 p.m., said no other details could be released.

Elkhart County 911 Center dispatchers said the initial call came in at 10:47 p.m. The Elkhart Police Department, Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, an ambulance and a K-9 unit were all called to the scene.

As of midnight, police were knocking on doors to gather details. It was unclear which apartment building the shooting happened in.

As of 12:40 a.m. Bradberry said further information was not being released and could not confirm a timetable for when more details would be made available. The victim had "gunshot wounds" and was dead by the time police arrived, according to a news release posted to the sheriff's department Citizen Observer website. As of 1:20 a.m., the release did not give a sex, age or name of the victim. It also said officers were still at the scene and continuing to investigate.

We will be updating this story as more information becomes available.
