Two injured in single-vehicle crash on U.S. 12 in Cass County

A 17-year-old driver overturned his vehicle after falling asleep while driving on U.S. 12. The driver and a 21-year-old passenger were both taken to the hospital for injuries.

Two Sturgis men were taken to Elkhart General Hospital after a crash on U.S. 12 in Porter Township Sunday night, March 16, according to a news release from the Cass County Sheriff's Office.

Driver Kyle Hopkins, 17, told authorities that he was driving west on U.S. 12, just east of Birch Road at about 11:13 p.m. when he fell asleep, crossed the center line, ran off the roadway and overturned the vehicle. There was one other person in the car, identified as Frank Tenny-Button, 21.

Alcohol was not a factor, according to the news release. Police don't know if they were wearing seat belts. The crash is still under investigation.
