A four car crash sent four people to the hospital Sunday afternoon, March 9, including two people who were taken to Memorial Hospital for life-threatening injuries.

A call came in at approximately 12:30 p.m. for a crash in the middle of U.S. 20 just west of S.R. 15.

Police say Devin Jewel, 21, of Elkhart, was driving a tan Chevrolet Impala sedan and heading eastbound when the car crossed the center line and hit three westbound vehicles head-on.

An extrication unit was called to the scene. Jewel was flown by MedFlight to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for life-threatening incapacitating injuries, said Elkhart County Police Lt. Casey Lehman, team leader of the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team.

KC McClain, 25, of Elkhart was taken to Elkhart General Hospital and then Memorial Hospital for his life-threatening injuries. His two passengers, Kayla McClain, 25, and Aiden McClain, 5, both of Elkhart, were taken to Elkhart General Hospital for their internal injuries.

The drivers of the other two vehicles involved were not injured.

It's not yet known if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.

That section of U.S. 20 was closed in both directions for several hours on Sunday as police cleared the scene.

Jefferson and Concord township fire departments responded to the crash.
