ELKHART — No one was injured when a car rear-ended a bus transporting more than 20 Baugo Community Schools students to school Friday morning, March 7.
The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department and Baugo Township EMS units were called at about 8:08 a.m. to C.R. 16 near C.R. 3 on reports of a two-vehicle crash, according to Elkhart County dispatchers.
One of the vehicles involved was a Baugo school bus which was transporting 23 elementary and intermediate-aged students to school, said Scott Kovatch, director of operations for Baugo Community Schools.
Kovatch said he and the superintendent were driving nearby when they received a call about the crash. The two officials arrived at the scene about three minutes after the call.
Kovatch said he got on the bus and talked with the driver and students. He counted the students, and with the help of other officials and officers took them to a driveway nearby to get students checked by EMS units.
Kovatch said students arrived to their respective schools at about 8:50 a.m. and were assessed again by the school nurse.
"The sheriff's department, EMS, everyone was great," Kovatch said. "The kids were great. They listened well to me and followed our instructions."
