Eight new recruits sworn into positions at Elkhart Fire Department

ELKHART — The Elkhart Fire Department added seven new firefighters to the force during a ceremony Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Elkhart City Board of Public Safety meeting.

Eight firefighter recruits completed the hiring process and seven of them were sworn in during the ceremony, which took place at Elkhart City Hall. Only seven firefighters were sworn in Monday. The eighth recruit will be sworn in later in the week, Fire Chief Mike Compton said.

The new firefighters are:

Zachariah Lail

Joseph Huber

Stewart Otto

Vincenzo Siciliano

Zachary Burrington

Sam Bartlett

Seth Skipper

Santana Martinez

The hiring process consists of a written test, a physical agility test and an oral interview, as well as background checks.

Elkhart City Mayor Dick Moore spoke during the ceremony and delivered the oaths of office for the new firefighters.

Compton also announced two promotions in the fire department.

Lt. Rob McClintic was promoted to captain. McClintic has been in the fire department for the last 20 years. He has held several positions, including medic chauffeur, medic lieutenant, pump engineer and suppression lieutenant.

Pump engineer Mike Hochstetler was promoted to lieutenant. Hochstetler has been in the fire department for eight years. He is currently a shift instructor.
