ELKHART — Elkhart firefighters spent Sunday afternoon getting a fire under control at Premium Concrete Services.

The call came in around 1 p.m., Elkhart Battalion Chief Wes Johnson said, and crews found the building fully involved when they arrived. It took them nearly an hour to get the fire under control.

"It had a heck of a head start on us by the time we got here," Johnson said.

When fire crews arrived on scene, an explosion occurred, likely due to tanks of acetylene, propane, oxygen and diesel fuel stored inside the building.

"We're guessing probably some of the storage tanks exploded," Johnson said.

Due to the explosion, the blaze was initially deemed unsafe, which delayed firefighters' efforts to control the fire.

There were no people inside the building when it caught fire, but the building was damaged.

Johnson said investigators had not been able to enter the building yet but believed the materials inside were likely to be a total loss.

"It's heavily damaged throughout," he said. "The contents will probably be a total loss I'm thinking, or close to it."

Premium Concrete Services, located at 4331 Pine Creek Road, is a family-owned concrete contractor.
