Elkhart man gets 2 years probation on federal marijuana charges

An Elkhart man was sentenced to probation on charges related to a marijuana growing operation in his garage.

SOUTH BEND — An Elkhart man was sentenced to two years on probation this week for growing marijuana in his garage.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Michael Spurgeon, 47, was sentenced to two years probation by Judge Robert L Miller Jr. in Federal Court this week.

Spurgeon had pleaded guilty to a felony charge of manufacturing marijuana.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Agency in February 2013 found marijuana plants, grow materials and grow lights belonging to Spurgeon in the garage of an Elkhart home.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Frank Schaffer.
