Sheriff's department investigating hit-and-run accident in Elkhart

A dark pickup truck reportedly involved in the crash left the scene without calling police or checking on the other driver.

ELKHART — Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that sent one woman to the hospital early Sunday morning, Feb. 16.

Deputies from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department responded at about 1:26 a.m. to C.R. 20, east of Pleasant Plain Avenue for reports of a car crash.

According to a press release from the sheriff's department, Mariana Avelino, 18, was driving an SUV east on C.R. 20, east of Pleasant Plain Avenue, when a dark pickup truck pulled out of a parking lot on the north side of the road.

The pickup truck hit Avelino's vehicle. The SUV spun, going off the road and hitting a utility pole before coming to rest on a snow pile.

The pickup truck left the scene immediately without providing any information to Avelino, checking with her, or contacting police to report the crash.

Avelino was taken to Elkhart General Hospital, where she was treated for neck and head pain, according to the press release.

The sheriff's department continues to investigate the crash.
