WARSAW — A Warsaw man has been arrested for allegedly selling a badger on Craigslist.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources began an investigation after receiving a tip on the department's tip line that Matthew M. Kerkhoff, 21, had listed a taxidermy mounted badger for sale on the website.

It is illegal to sell or possess protected species such as badgers, bobcats or river otters without a valid permit from the state, according to the DNR.

DNR conservation officers investigated the allegation against Kerkoff and arrested him on preliminary charges of unlawful possession of wildlife and unlawful sale of wildlife, both class C misdemeanors.

The Indiana DNR encourages the public to call its tip line at 1-800-TIP-IDNR whenever they witness violations of fish and wildlife laws. The Turn In a Poacher (TIP) program offers rewards for information leading to the arrest of any person violating fish and wildlife laws, according to the news release.
