ELKHART — A semi driver had to be extricated from the tanker semi he was driving after the semi slipped off the road and flipped over on the Indiana Toll Road Sunday morning, Jan. 19.

The Osolo Township Fire Department responded to the scene in the east-bound lanes of the toll road, just west of S.R. 19 near the 92 mile marker just after 9 a.m., a dispatcher with the Elkhart County 911 Center confirmed.

The driver was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The tanker was transporting diesel fuel. While no leaks were apparent at the scene, a hazmat unit was called in as a precaution. The fuel may have to be removed from the tanker before the semi is moved.

Indiana State Police Master Trooper Tim McCormick said the semi driver was driving too fast for the road conditions, which caused the semi to slide off the road.
