ELKHART — A man who stole a woman’s purse in downtown Elkhart ran into the Elkhart Police Department’s Assistant Chief while making his getaway Friday afternoon, Jan. 3.

A caller told Elkhart dispatchers that a black man wearing red gloves and Ed Hardy jeans had stolen her purse at B on the River around 4:20 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3 and took off running across Central Park.

Moments later, Assistant Chief Laura Koch contacted dispatch over the radio and asked them to confirm the suspect’s description.

“I’ve got him here on the Plaza,” she said.

A dispatcher confirmed that the thief had come across Koch in Civic Plaza, where she apprehended him.
