14-year-old was driving in fatal Cass County crash; 12-year-old died at the scene

A 12 year old died at the scene of a single-vehicle crash in Cass County after the 14-year-old who was behind the wheel lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree.

MILTON TOWNSHIP — A 14-year-old was identified as the driver in a one-vehicle wreck that killed a 12-year-old passenger in Cass County early Tuesday morning, Dec. 31, reports The Elkhart Truth's news partner WNDU.

The Cass County Sheriff confirmed late Tuesday that 14-year-old Brandon Burr was driving and Adrian Chiquito, 12, was the passenger who died. Both boys were from Niles, reports WNDU.

Burr was taken to Memorial Hospital of South Bend with critical injuries. Chiquito was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies from the Cass County Sheriff's Office were called to the crash at 2:05 a.m. on Bertrand Street, east of 21st Street, in Milton Township, according to a press release from the sheriff's department.

The vehicle was going east on Bertrand Street at a high speed when Burr lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. Both boys were wearing seat belts, according to the press release.

Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Services, Niles Township Fire Department and Berrien County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene.
