ELKHART — An Elkhart County resident fell victim to a phone scam, and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is reminding the community to be alert and report any other scams in the area.

The sheriff’s department reports that a person claiming to be from the American Cash Awards Company called and said the victim had won $480,000 in a sweepstakes.

For the victim to receive the funds, the victim was told to send several payments for the winning money to “clear customs” in Florida.

The victim provided a credit card number to the caller and sent out “a few thousand dollars,” but never received the $480,000.

The sheriff’s department said anyone who is contacted by phone, email or mail and is told they won something but to obtain the prize they are required to pay, wire funds or provide a credit card number should be leery, ask additional questions of the caller and contact the sheriff’s department at 574-533-4151.
