Elkhart police continue to investigate fatal shooting

ELKHART — Police continue to investigate the death of a teenager from a shooting in the south side of Elkhart earlier this week.

The Elkhart Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in 1300 block of Prairie Street at about 2:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23.

Devonte J. Patrick, 18, was found with a gunshot wound and was taken to Elkhart General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Patrick had recently moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., with his brother, and was back in Elkhart to spend the holidays with his mother, according to family members.

According to a press release from the Elkhart Police Department, the homicide unit continues to receive new and relevant information on the case from outside sources.

However, officers do not think the shooting was a random act based on the information gathered so far, according to the press release.
