Driver of horse-drawn buggy dies after crash with van on S.R. 119
One man is dead and a woman was taken to a hospital Monday, Nov. 25, after a van crashed into a horse-drawn buggy on S.R. 119, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.
The crash was called in at 5:36 p.m. on S.R. 119 between C.R. 38 and C.R. 13, located about 4 miles southwest of Goshen.
Shirley N Leyva-Diaz, 52, of Goshen, was driving northbound on S.R. 119 in a 2005 Nissan Quest when she crashed into the horse-drawn buggy ahead of her, according to a news release from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.
The buggy's driver, Ammon Imhoff, 51, also of Goshen, was thrown from his seat and was pronounced dead at the scene, the news release said. Levya-Diaz was taken to IU Health hospital in Goshen to be treated for chest pain.
The badly damaged buggy was flipped on its side could be seen from a distance of about 100 feet from the crash site.
There were no passengers either vehicle.
MedFlight was initially called to the scene but could not respond due to the weather, according to a dispatcher from the Elkhart County 911 Center.
The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department Crash Investigation Team continues to investigate.
