ELKHART — Michael Shoun, arrested at the scene of a homicide and later charged with murder, appeared in court Thursday for his initial hearing.
Shoun, 26, of Elkhart, was charged in connection with the death of 17-year-old Tiana Alter.
The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department was called at 11:18 p.m. Nov. 2 to a home in Cleveland Township at 29482 C.R. 1, where officers found Alter’s body.
Elkhart County Coroner John White said Alter died of multiple sharp force injuries. He ruled her death a homicide Monday, Nov. 4.
Shoun was arrested at the scene of the homicide on unrelated charges. He had warrants from three different court cases.
Upon competing their investigation, the sheriff’s department forwarded the information to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office asking for a formal charge of murder to be filed against Shoun.
The prosecutor’s office filed the formal charge Wednesday.
Shoun was appointed an attorney from the public defender’s office.
His trial date was scheduled for March 3, 2014.
