ELKHART — Emergency units were called Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 1, to a business at the intersection of Wood Street and Gage Avenue to reports of smoke coming out of a mailbox.
The Elkhart fire and police departments were called to the intersection at about 3:45 p.m.
A mail carrier opened the mailbox and saw the inside was burnt and smoke was coming out, said Sgt. Scott Hupp, a shift supervisor at the police department.
Hupp said an arson investigator will look into the incident.
The intersection was blocked off with police tape while crews investigated. It reopened shortly after. The paint on the mailbox’s exterior was burnt brown in places.
