BRISTOL — A man from Aurora, Neb., died in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday night, Sept. 17, on the Indiana Toll Road.

The Indiana State Police identified the driver of a Corvette that crashed into the rear of a semi trailer as Shawn W. Young, 44.

State troopers responded to the accident shortly after 10 p.m. on the westbound lanes of the toll road near the 100.5-mile marker in northern Elkhart County. A white Corvette had rear-ended a semi trailer, according to a press release from state police.

The semi trailer was stopped in traffic in the westbound lane because of a back-up caused by a truck fire earlier near the 97-mile marker.

A witness said the driver of the Corvette never slowed down as it approached the semi trailer. The impact from the crash wedged the car under the semi, according to the press release.

The westbound lanes of the toll road, which were restricted at the time of the crash because of the truck fire, were closed for another 1 1/2 hours after the collision, said Sgt. Trent Smith, public information officer with the Indiana State Police Bremen Post.

The driver of the semi, Jakltongir Zakurlaev, 34, of West Chester, Ohio, received minor injuries from the crash. He was taken to Elkhart General Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Young was flown to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he later died from his injuries.

It does not appear alcohol was a factor in the crash, according to the press release. The driver was wearing a seat belt and the car’s airbags did deploy.

State troopers continue to investigate the crash.
