ELKHART — A Mishawaka man remains hospitalized in serious condition after an accident Tuesday in which he lost control of his motorcycle and struck the abutment of an underpass.

Witnesses told police that Shawn Duchac, 39, was driving his 2005 Suzuki motorcycle southbound on Benham Avenue at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the motorcycle around 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The vehicle first struck a curb and then the concrete support pillar of the underpass, according to an Elkhart Police Department accident report.

Officers arrived at the scene and found Duchac lying in the roadway beneath the underpass and his motorcycle against the curb farther down the road. Duchac was wearing a helmet, according to the report.

Duchac was taken to Elkhart General Hospital with head injuries and was later transferred to Memorial Hospital in South Bend where he was listed in serious condition on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 11.

Benham Avenue was closed between Harrison Street and the underpass for about an hour Tuesday as police investigated the crash.
